Superstruct’s McGonigal on ARGs »

Given that I recently posted on Superstruct, it seems only appropriate to point out this engaging video from Business Week featuring Superstruct creator Jane McGonigal. It’s well worth the 7 minutes or so it takes to view.

In it, Jane addresses five questions:

  • What is an alternate reality game (ARG)?
  • How do ARG’s help build new collaboration skills?
  • Can ARG’s be built more cost-effectively than the usual high-tech, high graphic video games (very glad she addresses this one - affordability is a strong factor in favor o ARGS’s)
  • How can something like Superstruct serve as a real-world tool?
  • Do you still work on promotional games

Listen to it. Share it with friends and colleagues who like to think innovatively. And be sure to give Jane some points.

Are You a Super Empowered Hopeful Individual? »

If you haven’t yet checked out Superstruct, put it on your short list. You’ve only got about a week left to participate in this excellent alternate reality game (and - need I say it? - learning experience) from the Institute for the Future. I’ve mentioned Superstruct here before on Mission to Learn, but here’s a quick summary of what it’s about from the site’s FAQ:

Superstruct is the world’s first massively multiplayer forecasting game. By playing the game, you’ll help us chronicle the world of 2019–and imagine how we might solve the problems we’ll face. Because this is about more than just envisioning the future. It’s about making the future, inventing new ways to organize the human race and augment our collective human potential.

So far, more than 6,500 super empowered hopeful individuals, or SEHIs, in the parlance of the game, have joined in to imagine the world of 2019, share stories, and most importantly, envision the “superstructures” that will help us collectively solve the seemingly intractable problems we are likely to face by that point in time.

So what are superstructures? If you pay attention, you see examples of them around you every day. As the Superstruct site puts it:

Superstructing is what humans do. We build new structures on old structures. We build media on top of language and communication networks. We build communities on top of family structures. We build corporations on top of platforms for manufacturing, marketing, and distribution. Superstructing has allowed us to survive in the past and it will help us survive the super-threats.

Aside from the fact that the game highlights this fundamental aspect of human society, I really like that it draws upon readily available tools of the new Web - wikis, blogs, Web video, etc. - to “construct” the gaming environment. You won’t find the high end programming or technical pyrotechnics of World of Warcarft here, but what you will find is a place where people can exercise one of their most powerful learning tools - their own imaginations - in a highly compelling way. Jane McGonigal, the game’s director, was part of the team that pulled off something similar with last year’s World Without Oil.

There is plenty of food for thought here for organizations that may be interested in using role-playing and alternate realities to tackle tough strategic problems or seemingly intractable social issues.

And, this being a game, there are “prizes” to be had for those who excel in exercising their imagination in productive ways…

The following is straight from one of Superstruct’s e-mail newsletters. I encourage you to visit some or all of the links below to get a feel for what Superstruct is all about, and to witness the creativity it has engendered,
